The teacher education program is approved and accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and by the South Carolina State Board of Education, using established standards for approved programs.



Description of Courses 



Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education (121 credit hours)

(NOT OFFERED AT FORT JACKSON)


The Early Childhood Education program has specific competencies that are expected of candidates preparing to teach in grades PK-3. The objectives of the Early Childhood Education program complement the standards as set by the conceptual framework of the professional education unit. Additionally, the Early Childhood Education program meets the standards of the National Association of the Education of the Young Child (NAEYC).

IV. Content Cognate - 19 credit hours

Candidates in Early Childhood Education are required to complete a cognate consisting of twelve (12) hours of course work in one of four discipline areas: Mathematics, English, Science or Social Studies (all credit hours must be in one discipline). Candidates will enroll in a total of four (4) hours of Honors Thesis to develop and complete the requirement of a senior project or thesis. Additionally, candidates will complete an additional three (3) hours of free electives.






Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (121 credit hours)


The Elementary Education program has specific competencies that are expected of candidates preparing to teach in grades 2-6. The objectives of the Elementary Education program complement the standards as set by the conceptual framework of the professional education unit. Additionally, the Elementary Education program meets the standards of the Association of Childhood Education International (ACEI).

The Middle Level Education program has specific competencies that are expected of candidates preparing to teach in grades 5-8. The objectives of the Middle Level Education program complement the standards as set by the conceptual framework of the professional education unit. Additionally, the Middle Level Education program meets the standards of the National Middle Schools Association (NMSA).

PK-12 and Secondary Education Degree Programs

(NOT OFFERED AT FORT JACKSON)


Programs in Music Education and Art Education prepare teacher candidates for grades PK-12. Teacher candidates completing these programs receive Bachelor of Arts degrees. The programs in secondary education prepare teacher candidates to teach in grades 9-12. The Bachelor of Arts degree is offered in English Education and Bachelor of Science degrees are offered in Biology Education and in Mathematics Education. The curricula for Music Education, Art Education and English Education may be found in the specific departments in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Respectively, the Biology Education and Mathematics Education curricula can be found in the corresponding departments in the School of Mathematics and Science.

All teacher education candidates will enroll in a total of four (4) hours of Honors Thesis to develop and complete the requirement of a senior project or thesis. The senior project or thesis will complement the major field of study as the content relates to the field of education.
