Admission

All individuals interested in completing a teacher education program at Claflin University matriculate through four transition points. The first transition point starts with the declaration of a major in a teacher education area. The second transition point is Admission to Teacher Education, the third transition point is Admission to Clinical Practice and the final transition is university recommendation for South Carolina certification.

Transition Point I. Declaration of Major
Data will be collected on all individuals who officially declare a major in one of the teacher education programs. Data to be collected include GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and field experience evaluations.

Transition Point II. Admission to Teacher Education
Admission to teacher education is based upon consideration of each student’s academic achievement, professional and leadership potential, and dispositions. Any student desirous of completing a major in one of the six teaching options must seek formal admission to the teacher education program. The following steps are to be completed by a student for formal admission to candidacy:

1. Completion of at least forty-five (45) semester hours of course work.
2. A cumulative grade point average of 2.75
3. Passing Praxis I scores (reading, writing and mathematics)
4.1 Acceptable score on Interview I
5. Acceptable scores on Field Experience Evaluations I
6. Satisfactory ratings from two faculty members: one from a general education faculty member and another from an education faculty member. Once the student has been formally notified of admission to a teacher education program, he/she is then considered a candidate and is eligible to enroll in specialized methods courses. Students must be admitted to teacher education at least one semester prior to enrolling in Student Teaching (EDUC 450).

Transition Point III. Professional Clinical Practice
Admission to teacher education is based upon consideration of candidates’ continuous academic achievement, professional and leadership potential, and dispositions. Candidates must seek formal admission to professional clinical practice. The following steps are to be completed by a candidate for formal admission to professional clinical practice:

1. Maintain a minimum cumulative grade average of 2.75
2. 100 documented field experience hours
3. Passing Praxis II scores (all tests required for certification)
4. Passing scores on the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) at the level appropriate for certification
5.1 Acceptable score on Interview II
6. Accpetable score on Field Experience Evaluations II & III

Fingerprint Review
Effective Spring 2005, applicants for professional clinical practice must undergo a state fingerprint review. A criminal background could prevent a candidate from completing the program.

Transition Point IV: Graduation – Recommendation for Certification
The final formal stage of the teacher preparation program involves candidates’ completion of the professional clinical experiences, a passing grade in Student Teaching (EDUC 450) and satisfactory scores on all professional clinical evaluations. The following steps are to be completed by a candidate for recommendation for certification:

1. Earned a minimum cumulative grade average of 2.75
2. Grade of “C” or better in Student Teaching (EDUC 450)
3. Acceptable score on the Professional Portfolio
4. Acceptable score on the Teacher Work Sample
5.1 Acceptable score on the Long Range Plan
6. Acceptable score on the Mentor Teacher Evaluation
7. Acceptable score on the University Supervisor Evaluation
8. Completed Candidate Exit Survey
