General Information
As a part of the redesign of academic areas, the School of Education has reorganized
into administrative offices that support the three degree granting programs within
the school, the teacher education areas located within the School of Natural Sciences
and Mathematics and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as the
physical education courses that support the general education requirements for the
university.
The teacher education areas at Claflin University that come under the
governance of the School of Education include Art Education, Early Childhood Education,
Elementary Education, English Education, Mathematics Education, and Music Education.
These six (6) areas all lead to certification to teach in public schools. |

The School of Education also houses three (3) administrative offices designed to
support the work of faculty and students in the School of Education. The Office
of Curriculum Instruction, and Assessment is designed to provide support for faculty
in the area of general administrative support as well as faculty development. This
office also works with education candidates on performance assessments (i.e. interviews
and portfolio assessment). The Office of Field Experiences and Professional Development
Schools coordinates all activities between the School of Education and the University’s
public school partners. This includes the work of developing the two professional
development schools (Whittaker Elementary and Clark Middle School). The Office of
Student Services was developed in light of data on students’ pass rates on Praxis
I from previous years.
State law requires all individuals who complete a teacher education program that
leads to initial certification at the undergraduate level to pass all parts of Praxis
I (reading, writing, and mathematics). The Office of Student Services supports students
in passing this exam by providing information on the examination, general support
in registering for the examination, and workshops that directly support students
on competencies measured by the examination. The Office of Student Support also
handles all advising responsibilities for students in the School of Education.
